Celebrating Purim - For The First Time

Last Updated March 4, 2004

Purim celebrations are already underway at the Jewish Agency’s Sapir Absorption Center in Kiryat Yam. The children living in the absorption center participated in many holiday related activities including preparing masks and costumes. For some of the immigrants it was a unique experience.

Ethiopian Jewry went into the Diaspora after the First Temple period and continued the Jewish traditions and holidays that they knew (Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, Passover, etc.).

The holiday of Purim, which was instituted during the Second Temple period, was not part of the Ethiopian Jews tradition. The staffs of the Jewish Agency’s absorption centers teach the olim about the holiday while the immigrants cannot conceal their delight.
