Bar Mitzvah Twinning: From Scotland to Safed

November 1, 2006 / 10 Cheshvan 5767

The Jewish community in Glasgow, Scotland has warmly embraced and adopted  the new Ethiopian immigrants living at the Tzahal 9 Absorption Center by joining the Jewish Agency Bar Mitzvah Twinning program. This program enables Jewish youth from overseas to get to know and make lasting friendships with their peers in Israel who come from a totally different background.

Nick, a bar mitzvah boy from Glasgow, visited the Safed Absorption Center recently with his parents and was hosted by his "twin brother" Havtamo. Language did not present an obstacle for Nick and his friend as they set out to play together while their parents engaged in friendly discussions.

"This has been the most exciting visit of my life",  declared Nick at the end of his visit.
Nick and his family gravitated toward the children immediately and Nick's mother was rewarded when Havtamo's youngest sibling climbed on to her lap without a shred of hesitation.

This special bond will continue throughout the year, climaxing with a joint bar mitzvah celebration in Jerusalem for Ethiopian immigrants and bar mitzvah boys from overseas.
