Opening remarks were given by the Chairman of the Executive of the Jewish Agency, Mr. Natan Sharansky, who explained how The Jewish Agency assists in the economic development of Israel's social and geographic peripheries, through the operation of loan funds (inter alia). These funds are supported by the global Jewish Community, especially Jewish federations, and help entrepreneurs set up small businesses or expand existing businesses.

Sharansky congratulated the Entrepreneurship Nurturing Centres on reaching their 20th year of operation and noted their contribution to the area of entrepreneurship, and their important impact on the absorption of the waves of immigrants, mostly from the Former Soviet Union, in the early 90’s.

Throughout Israel there are 25 such centers that provide a variety of services to entrepreneurs as they get started in business, as well as to existing business owners. The Jewish Agency works in cooperation with, and in support of, the Entrepreneurship Nurturing Centre network.

As part of the discussions of the Forum, Amir Sznajderman, the Director of The Jewish Agency’s Unit for Economic Development and Loan Funds, updated the participants on his desire to expand the activities of these Funds as well as about the new personnel appointments to the Unit – Meira Schwartz and Yvgeny Bradzin to the positions of Fund Coordinators in the Central and Northern parts of the country, respectively.
