Informal education

Various extra-curricular activities and courses are arranged for children and youth by community centers, youth movements and some schools. Extra lessons at schools, community centers and in private frameworks are common, especially in mathematics and English. Informal education also includes the sports, music, drama, dance, art and hobby classes that children have come to take for granted. Children find their afternoons filling up quickly and parents find their pockets emptying just as rapidly as each of these courses usually runs over 100 NIS monthly. Multiply that by a few children and a few classes and the result is often staggering.

Expenses

A child with Down Syndrome, who is learning computers with the other children, is an integral part of this kindergarten.

Tuition in kindergarten and elementary schools is free, but textbooks and school supplies are usually not provided and must be acquired by the student. In some schools, parents pay a monthly sum which covers everything from books to field trips (not supplies like pencils, etc.). From time to time, there may be additional expenses for organized extra-curricular activities (music, dancing, hobby groups), school trips, English lessons for English-speakers, parties and recommended learning aids which are not budgeted by the authorities. These payments can be heavy, especially at the start of the school year. New olim can inquire about stipends or assistance from oleh organizations.
