The ABC’s of Education in Israel - part 5

Special needs

Children with special physical, emotional, mental and learning needs, are placed in appropriate frameworks according to the nature of the need, to help them eventually achieve maximum integration, when possible, into the social and vocational life of their community. Thus, some are taken care of in special settings, while others attend regular schools where they may be assigned to self-contained groups or to mainstream classes with supplementary tutoring.

Gifted children

A national test is administered annually to second or third graders of which the top ten percentage of scorers are invited to a second examination. The high scorers on the second exam are eligible to participate in special programs for gifted children. Varying from region to region, the programs range from an afternoon, to one full day a week, to special schools for the gifted. As a rule, the goal of the programs are to provide a learning environment which brings together children with similarly high potential. The program focuses on creative thinking and leadership skills, and does not attempt to develop an expertise in any particular subject.
