March 2008, Volume 59

Dear Friends,

With the coming of Spring and Passover, the holiday of freedom, I want to share with you some of the events in which our Selah and Kedma students will be participating.

We will hold a model seder for all the young immigrants for whom this is their first seder in Israel. During the course of the seder, customs will be explained and for those who are not know, they will become familiar with traditional dishes of the holiday.

In the annual Atlit event we will commemorate the period of illegal immigration with hikes along the routes taken by illegal immigrants as they evaded arrest by the British authorities. The students will then continue onto an IDF base in the mountains of the Galilee for three days of "training". They will don uniforms, eat army rations, sleep in tents and get a taste of what awaits them in the IDF. We wish them well during that busy week, and we keep our fingers crossed that carrying on a proud Ibim tradition, they will take first place in the week's competitions.

We have had a quiet few days in terms of rockets, although we don't let down our guard, and as you will see further down, we have six new "safe units" in Ibim close to the staff and residents quarters.

Best Regards and Wishes for a Happy Passover,
Soni Singer and the entire staff of
the Ibim-San Diego Student Village

Pass the Matza

With the help of teachers speaking Russian and Amharic, Ibim immigrant students celebrated a model seder with explanations each step of the way.

Welcome Visits

Ibim was host to two groups of Jewish Agency visitors on the same day. Moshe Vigdor, Executive Director of the Jewish Agency headed a group and later in the day, the WZO executive headed by Zev Bielski, Chairman of the Jewish Agency arrived on the premises. The WZO executive held their meeting in Sderot to show solidarity with the citizens of our beleaguered neighbor and after the meeting, the entire group came through Ibim to show us their support as well. These visits cheer us and give us strength to stick to our goals of education and absorption throughout this untenable period.

A Purim Punch

Mixing current events and tradition, or Haniyeh and Haman, the theme of this year's Ibim Purim party was, "Don't let the kassam's get you down". The first prize in our costume competition went to three Kedma students who dressed up as the Israeli flag. The staff went all the way and dressed up as kassam rockets. Joining our party were soldiers from a nearby base where our Kedma and Selah students volunteer.

Staying Safe

Whereas Ibim has bomb shelters and a newly secured dining room, the installation of six new prefab "safe units," generously donated by the UJC, in the residential and office area allows the staff and residents an accessible shelter during rocket attacks. The units were placed considering the least intrusive locations partially hidden by shrubbery. We will design the exterior of the units decoratively and professionally. Special thanks go to Leon, Yuval and Zion for their insistence on our safety and the placement of the units in a timely fashion.
