On Wednesday, July 12, 2006 the Hizbullah terrorist organization entered sovereign Israeli territory and kidnapped two soldiers on the border of Lebanon. Eight Israeli soldiers were killed. At the same time, Hizbullah launched Katyusha rocket attacks against Israeli communities near the border. Israel responded with Operation Change of Direction

The Jewish Agency for Israel joined with UJC, Keren Hayesod and its partners in Israel and abroad to provide immediate critical intervention on multiple fronts during this time of crisis, and in its devastating aftermath. Over 80 Israeli companies and 800 volunteers throughout Israel joined in this effort. 

The full long-term, residual effects of these hostilities are yet unknown. But, based on its years of past experience, the Jewish Agency has developed a comprehensive plan for transforming devastation to opportunity.

*The Israel Emergency Campaign (IEC) is a system wide effort, spearheaded by United Jewish Communities, to bring urgent and ongoing relief, support and assistance to the people of Israel - both those under fire and those whose lives are effected by the war.  The Israel Emergency Campaign is built upon a comprehensive and coordinated partnership between the Federations of North America and their overseas partners, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.


Fast Facts

Emergency Safe Summer Camps were established within 48 hours of the outbreak of war.

Some 40,000 children attended more than 50 sleep away camps.

Over 2,100 new immigrants were moved to in southern or central Israel.

The Jewish Agency installed in bomb shelters:

  • 1,800 air-condition units
  • 1,600 televisions
  • 2,700 emergency lighting fixtures
  • 50 chemical toilets
  • 150 water coolers
  • 30 water pumps

The Jewish Agency is providing immediate emergency funds to help small business owners to get back on their feet.

The Jewish Agency is lifting the spirits and relieving the stress of tens of thousands of war-wary northern residents - Jews, Arabs and Druze – by providing fun family activities in major northern cities.
