Jan Schechter is the 21st President of AMIT and was installed at the organization’s National Convention in July 2003. Ms. Schechter represents the third generation of her family dedicated to religious Zionism and the Mizrachi movement.
Ms. Schechter’s grandparents and parents fled Vienna for the United States in the late 1930s. She was born in Philadelphia and received a B. A. from Stern College for Women and her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.
Ms. Schechter has worked as a legal editor of Trusts and Estates magazine and as an attorney with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. She also has served as President of the Stern College Alumnae Association.
A member of AMIT for almost 40 years, Ms. Schechter has been particularly active in the Lawrence-Woodmere area of Long Island. She has held several of the organization’s major national portfolios, including Programming, Public Affairs and Planned Giving Chair, and was National Treasurer immediately before her elevation to President.
Ms. Schechter is a Committee Member since September 2006.
