Daughter of slain Ethiopian couple making aliyah

April 26, 2006

By RUTH EGLASH

The daughter of Ethiopian couple Ilu and Adelu Beju, who died April 14 in a murder-suicide in their Or Yehuda home, is set to arrive in Israel Friday morning, according to a Jewish Agency for Israel statement released Wednesday.

Abtam Bezeh, the daughter Ilu Beju and his first wife, has been waiting to immigrate to Israel since 2001. Due to the tragedy in her family, representatives of JAFI in Israel and Ethiopia speeded up her application. Bezeh, her husband Abay Negato and their son will first live in the Mevasseret Zion Absorption Center, where Bezeh will be reunited with her seven younger siblings.

According to JAFI sources, Bezeh was not officially eligible to immigrate under either the law of return or the special law of entry, which applies specifically to the Falash Mura community. However, her arrival in Israel was a special request by Jewish Agency chairman Ze'ev Bielski to the interior ministry.
