Upcoming Events for the Week of 30 June Open to Press Coverage.
Saturday Night, 29 June
· Jerusalem, Gerard Behar Hall, 21:30. A performance of the Ukrainian dance company "Jewish Soul", which arrived as part of a Ukrainian Jewish Congress solidarity mission to Israel.
Sunday, 30 June ("Kaf BeTamuz")
· Jerusalem, Mt. Herzl, 18:30. Annual National Memorial Ceremony for Herzl, with the presence of the President of the State of Israel, the Chairman of the Jewish Agency and other public figures.
· Ashkelon, "Beit Canada" Jewish Agency Absorption Center, 17:30. Concluding Ceremony of the "Older Brother" program. University students, who served as tutors to Ethiopian youngsters, will celebrate the conclusion of the program together with youngsters.
· A group of 40 physicians and pharmacists from France will arrive for a "pilot trip" to examine aliyah possibilities. In the course of their visit they will meet senior physicians in hospitals and HMOs throughout Israel.
· A delegation of 35 rabbis from South Africa will arrive on a week long solidarity mission.
Monday, 1 July
· Dorohoi, Romania. Memorial ceremony at the site where the Shoa began 62 years ago.
Wednesday, 3 July
· Jerusalem, Knesset, 09:00. Meeting of the Knesset's Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Commission in the presence of delegates of the World Congress of Russian Speaking Jews. The Agenda includes Israel-Diaspora relations and manifestations of solidarity with Israel.
· Jerusalem, 12:00. Mr. Sallai Meridor, Chairman of the Zionist Executive, will present Herzl Diaries to the President of the State of Israel (in the context of "Kaf BeTamuz" Herzl Memorial Day, which occurred two days earlier.
Anticipated Immigration Statistics
During the coming week 487 immigrants are expected to arrive in Israel. Of these: 145 from Russia, 61 from the Central Asian republics of the Former Soviet Union and the Southern Caucasus, 92 from Argentina, 57 from Ethiopia, 41 from France, and the remainder from the U.K., South Africa and Peru.
Landmarks in the History of Zionism
· 3 July 1922. The His Majesty's Government published a "White Paper," which was the harbinger of anti-Zionist policy on the part of Great Britain. Immigration to Mandatory Palestine was conditioned on the ability of the economic capacity to absorb the immigrants.
· 5 July 1950. The Knesset passed the Law of Return, which granted the right of all Jews to immigrate to Israel.
· 6 July 1882. The beginning of the "First Aliyah," in whose framework some 25,000 Jews immigrated to Palestine. The vast majority of the immigrants were from Russia and Romania.
