Scholarships for Students in Northern Israel Colleges

Unmet Financial Need: $15,000,000

During the 2005-6 academic year, approximately 14,300 students were studying toward their BA and MA degrees in the north. Recent surveys have shown, however, that the number of registered students for the upcoming academic year has dropped by 30%.

The Need

The prospect of not attending college this coming year has serious consequences not just for these individuals, but for the colleges in particular and the north as a whole. Without higher education degrees, these individuals will not achieve advanced levels of professional and economic success. Without enough enrolled students, colleges will be forced to close their doors. Moreover, without educated young people living and studying in their midst, the future of Northern communities remains stilted. The bottom line: We must ensure these young people are not forced to drop out of school as a means of ensuring the future advancement and achievement of the entire Northern region. The next ten days will be critical as registration for colleges close.

The Jewish Agency Response

The Jewish Agency Student Scholarship Fund will revitalize northern Israel by providing students attending institutes of higher education in the north with academic scholarships. The goals of the Scholarship Fund are threefold:

  • To enable thousands of students to pursue higher education in colleges in northern Israel.

  • To attract strategic 'brainpower' to become involved in northern communities in order to strengthen community life and ensure their economic, cultural and social development.

  • To prevent the collapse of higher educational institutes across the north due to the drop in registration.

All students continuing their studies in colleges across the north are eligible. Students will receive up to 50% of their scholarship funding from the Jewish Agency; an additional matching grant of 25% is being sought from the Ministry of Education. Scholarships will be issued for one year, during which time students will commit 4 hours a week of voluntary community service in programs like A New Tomorrow throughout northern Israel. By incorporating an element of community involvement, these scholarships not only encourage students to study in the north but also choose to make it their long-term home.

Funding Request

Your support of $15,000,000 will establish the Student Scholarship Fund and provide scholarships for 15,000 students studying in northern Israel's institutes of higher education. Although these scholarships serve a targeted number of students, they benefit thousands more through implemented voluntary services provided for the communities, by ensuring the continued academic pursuits of hundreds of colleges and by strengthening communities.
