“My father was one of the first Ethiopians brought to Israel in the late 50’s by the Jewish Agency where he was trained to be a community leader back in Ethiopia. For this, he was arrested, tortured and almost killed in Ethiopia. My whole family managed to make aliyah, and I carry my father’s legacy of caring for our community and helping them to advance in Israel.”
Esti Elias (27) was born in Ambover, Ethiopia. Her father, Ya’akov Elias, was brought to Israel by the Jewish Agency in the late 1950s to study at the Kfar Batya Youth Village. He played an essential role in the future aliyah of the Ethiopian Jewish community.
