In the largest project of its kind, last month the Jewish Agency invited one parent of 180 lone immigrant soldiers serving in IDF combat units on a fully funded trip to Israel to visit their children. Many of these soldiers served during the war in Lebanon over the summer and had not seen their families in over a year.

They come from Acco, from Jaffa, from Addis Ababa. Youths from wrecked households and an environment that allowed them to fail. Now they’re in a race to the top. Seventy trainees, at-risk youths, participate in the Hadassah Neurim sports project. This year they’ve already brought back 93 medals—the boarding school’s shelves no longer have room for more trophies. And they have no intention of stopping. At least not until the Olympics.

The Jewish Agency for Israel, in cooperation with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, granted $5,000 to each of the 124 families of soldiers killed in Israel's second Lebanon war to memorialize their loved ones. The thank you letters received from the families were deeply moving. In the words of one bereaved family, "Our pain cries up to the heavens…We thank you for your support."
