A group of 70 Jewish and Arab young people from various communities throughout the Gilboa participated in a special orienteering course. The three-day course was held in the area between the Ramon Crater and Sde Boker in the Negev Desert.
The course included lectures about maps and map-reading, finding checkpoints and field navigation, as well as nighttime orienteering and navigating by the stars.
After the young people experienced crossing the Ramon Crater with each of them taking their turn at leading the group to their final checkpoint, the group conducted their final trek in the Zin Desert region around Sde Boker, some 14 miles of harsh mountains and valleys in an area difficult to navigate.
During the evening, the young people exhibited a strong sense of brotherhood and co-existence.
According to Dedi Suissa, director of Youth Culture and Special Events, "this orienteering course was the first of its kind for our area's future leaders. The course is the opening round in what we hope becomes an annual tradition in the Gilboa region".
