The WIZO World Congress at Tel Aviv's exclusive Hilton Hotel was the scene of a unique exhibition of specially designed mezuzahs made by Ethiopian women from the Afula region that are part of "Adissia", a women's cooperative in Afula.
In their work, the women integrated a variety of ethnic Jewish styles in which they combined traditional Ethiopian with various other Jewish artistic symbols and motifs of a variety of Jewish communities.
Intertwined into this amazing exhibition of mezuzot are motifs from Jewish communities from around the world such as India, Germany, Afghanistan and Morocco and of course Ethiopia.
Furthermore, the exhibit shows the artistic self-empowerment the women from Adissia underwent. With the help of various workshops that were held at the WIZO Community Center in Afula the women were able to improve and enrich their traditional artistic skills.
During the project, they went from being artisans to artists. The fascinating photographs in the exhibit presented the process the women underwent and described the amazing experiences of the Ethiopian women in Israel.
