At the end of this year's elementary school year, the Mayor of Afula, Mr. Avi Elkabetz felt that every pupil had to visit Israel's capital, the holy city of Jerusalem. So under his wonderful initiative, some 1000 children, parents and teachers traveled to Jerusalem on June 28th, 2009 for a special city tour and end-of-year ceremony there.
The tour was scheduled to coincide with a city management meeting in the Western Wall tunnels, at the end of which city council members came out to meet the Afula children at different sites.
Each school received its own guide from the Western Wall adminisrtration for the day. And students in communication and media from the Jezre'el Valley College, accompanied by Ms. Bina Nir, documented the entire day's events, including the production of a small film.
Students of the Hesder Yeshiva greeted the students with dancing and singing as they entered the Western Wall plaza for the ceremony. After greetings from the Rabbi of the Western Wall, Afula's Chief Rabbi and Mayor Avi Elkabetz, the Mayor's Prizes for Outstanding Students were awarded by Mr. Elkabetz, the deputy mayor, the deputy director general for education and welfare and the school principals.
