Projects Financed by the Arad-Tamar - New Jersey-Delaware Partnership in 2006
9.1.2007
Educational, Social and Community Affairs

The partnership's objectives include the advancement of educational, social and community affairs in the Arad-Tamar Region.

  • Homework Club - Ein Gedi: Afternoon homework assistance for Ein Gedi junior and senior high school students.
  • Long School Day: At kindergartens and elementary schools (grades 1-3) in Arad, with about 500 children participating. The program includes a hot lunch, tutoring and enrichment activities.
  • Ran's Place: A club in caf? format where youth and young adults from various population strata gather for workshops, personal discussions, leisure-time activities and more.
  • Free Friday; About 100 elementary school students in Tamar participate in this Friday enrichment program (Tamar has a five-day school week).
  • Tamar Educational Radio Center: Ein Gedi High School students participate in the program, learning to operate the regional radio station soon to be set up.
  • Young Rock Groups: The Arad Community Center assists young musicians by providing professional supervision and studio services for rehearsals and performances.
  • Empowering Educational Leadership: Teachers, parents and students receive guidance in empowering leadership and conducting arbitration at school.
P2P

One important aspect of the partnership's objectives concerns development of ties between the Region - and Israel as a whole - and Diaspora Jewry, with specific emphasis on our partnered communities. Ties are formed primarily through reciprocal visits. Most P2P projects are extended ones, some of them instituted at the inception of the partnership.

  • Maccabiah Games for Jewish Youth: Every year, athletes from Arad and Tamar are sent to the United States to join youth from our partnered communities in sports competitions. During their stay, they are hosted at the homes of families in these communities, with whom they form long-term ties.
  • Kefiyada: Young people from the partnered communities come to the Region for one month each year to serve as counselors at an English-language summer camp. After hours, the young people tour the Region and familiarize themselves with people and places in Israel.
  • Ivriyada: A project parallel to the Kefiyada in which young people from the Region visit the partnered communities for about two months to serve as summer camp counselors. During their stay, they are hosted by local families. Besides working as counselors, they are also responsible for a special "Israel Room" at each of the camps, as well as for special events such as IDF Day, holiday stories and welcoming Shabbat.
  • Volunteers from the Partnered Communities: Volunteers come to the Region from the partnered communities for periods of up to one month to experience local life, work at various community institutions and expand partnership circles in the United States. Since the beginning of this year, two pairs of volunteers have come to Arad from the Atlantic-Cape May and Delaware Communities, donating their time at Beit Gilad and at local schools.
  • Young Shlichim: The partnership sends young people to U.S. communities to help reinforce Jewish/Zionist identity in the Diaspora, introduce the partnership Region and conduct joint projects. This year, three shlichim were dispatched: Hila Elhayini (Delaware), Yaniv Tayar (Central New Jersey) and Itai Ereli (Southern New Jersey).
  • Delegations: This year, groups of youth and adults are coming to the Region from our partnered communities. During their stay, they meet with local residents who share similar interests and/or are those in the same age group as the visitors.
    Regional and Tourism Development

    • Arad-Tamar Economic Development Unit (EDU): The EDU assists and promotes economic projects in the Region, advances entrepreneurs and business owners, creates new sources of employment and supports existing businesses. Partnership 2000 has provided financing for the EDU over the past ten years.
    • Neve Zohar Community Supervision: This project prepares the community social infrastructure for expanding Neve Zohar and helping its residents in various ways.
    • Arad Tourism Promotion: Helping to turn Arad into a tourist city. This year, several major tourism events were conducted in Arad, such as a model airplane show, recycling and art festival, motorcycle race, Masada March and more.
    • Dead Sea Information Center: The Center, that operates with Partnership 2000 assistance, serves thousands of visitors to the Region, providing them with information about activities, hiking trails, health and tourist sites and local events.

    Special Financing

    • Getting Promoted: 120 needy children in Arad were given free bags and assistance in acquiring school supplies as part of a program sponsored by JAFI and Office Depot.
    • Psychological Service Renovations: The Psychological Service Center is about to move to new premises, thanks to a $100,000 contribution received through JAFI, enabling renovation of a building and acquisition of furniture and equipment.
    • Beit Gilad: This year, we received a contribution of $25,000 to renovate and expand the premises for the benefit of participating elderly persons.
    • Summer Camp Scholarships: Dozens of children from Ethiopian immigrant families received scholarships to help defray summer camp costs.
    • Preserving Ethiopian Art: For several years, the Levaot School has conducted a program to preserve Ethiopian art, financed thanks to a contribution by Judge Jerry Weinstein of Atlantic City. Women of Ethiopian origin meet once a week and create artistic objects using traditional Ethiopian techniques.
    • Talitot and Tefilin: Boys at the Orly Absorption Center who reach bar mitzva age receive talitot and tefilin.
    • Conservatory Scholarships: About $16,000 received from the Young family of Delaware helped dozens of students pay for instrumental music lessons at the Arad Conservatory.
    • Protective Shielding for Arad Reservoirs: This year, we completed the reservoir shielding project, thanks to a contribution of $100,000 from the partnered communities.
    • Club for Youth from Ethiopian Immigrant Families: We will soon begin renovating a building allocated by the Arad Municipality as a club responding to the special needs of youngsters from the Ethiopian immigrant community in Arad.
