I would like to take this opportunity to express my admiration and appreciation for the amazing efforts of the elected officials and professional staffs of Misgav and Karmiel. My family and I have stayed in the north for the entire "experience" and have observed with pride the dedication and effectiveness with which our region has been managed during this difficult time.
As opposed to many other municipalities, which we have seen through news broadcasts and television coverage, our region's staff and officials did not leave for safer pastures, and worked tirelessly to serve the population and help us all. The exceptional standards of city management and dedication we have always enjoyed in the Misgav/Karmiel region once again were demonstrated, and this region not only was able to take care of its citizens, but even to provide excellent programming for both children and adults. Much of this was also due to the volunteer efforts of the Israeli public, from both the region and other areas.
Through my living room window, my family and I have witnessed the destruction rained down upon Karmiel. During my trips into town (particularly on Fridays), I sadly witnessed the damage around me, and I'm sure I only saw a fraction of it. However, as a dedicated fan of Karmiel, I have watched with admiration as the city kept functioning and providing services to the residents of Karmiel and the surrounding villages.
I salute Adi Eldar for his untiring efforts on behalf of the entire north in his capacity as the head of the Mayors' Council. He has been a determined and effective voice for the affected areas.
Lastly, I would like to thank the Jewish Agency and the Pittsburgh Jewish Community for helping our region at this difficult time. This, of course, applies in particular to staff and lay leadership. If our children were able to attend a camp in the center of the country for several days, it was the result of a Jewish Agency initiative, paid for in part by the emergency fundraising done in the U.S. The special funding that Pittsburgh sent also helped us to purchase crucial equipment and supplies. We have always been aware of Pittsburgh's commitment to our region, but it is especially appreciated during the difficult times (of which we've had quite a few since Partnership started).
Special thanks to Yael Reich for her moving daily reports on the "situation."
As I have said before, this region will get past this difficult period. It will take time, but it is good to know that our public officials and professional staff, as well as our Pittsburgh "mishpocho," will be working to make this happen.
