A New Year at the Children's Village

On the eve of the Succoth holiday (September 25) , a number of members from the YAD group sponsored by the Jewish Agency's Partnership 2000 program visited the Karmiel Children's Village.
As one of its declared objectives the YAD group has decided to invest its time and efforts in the children's village, and brought a Rosh Hashanah card for each of the children in the village. These were not just any New Year cards; rather they are the work of children from the Pittsburgh Jewish Community, Karmiel and Misgav's partner community in the P2K program for more than a decade. The children from Pittsburgh sat together in a local synagogue to draw and write Rosh Hashanah wishes, in Hebrew, to the 270 children residing in the village.
"The atmosphere in the village was amazing", the YAD members said, "we arrived in the afternoon hours before the beginning of the holiday, the children were at the peak of preparations. We visited 19 different succas, the children and their counselors we in various stages of preparation. Some were still in the construction stages, while others had already completed their fascinated decorations and had moved to the next stage of cooking and preparing for the many guests expected to arrive".
The YAD group with funding from Partnership 2000, recently returned from a successful visit to Pittsburgh and decided to conduct a series of four special activities at the village during the coming year.
Moreover, the group will provide 27 children from the village with assistance in their efforts to keep in touch with families from the Pittsburgh YAD group. The children and the Pittsburgh families have based their relationships upon an exchange of letters and the shipment of gifts by the Pittsburgh families, emails and videoconferences, etc.
The Israeli YAD group is currently 30 members and looking to expand its membership. To join the Karmiel-Misgav group you need to be between the ages 25-45, attend bi-weekly social gatherings and share a desire to be involved in the community.
