Davidson Expedition Comes to Zippori

Detroit's Jewish Federation will send a delegation of 50 college students from Michigan to participate in the 1998 William Davidson Zippori Archaeological Expedition in the Central Galilee June 25-Aug. 6.

The expedition is made possible through a special fund established in honor of the philanthropist, industrialist and communal leader's birthday. A similar program in 1997 drew about 35 young people.

Students who participate in the archaeological dig will earn six credits as they attend lectures, study pottery identification and restoration techniques under the direction of Hebrew University Prof. Zeev Weiss. The ancient site of Zippori, where the Mishnah was codified, was discovered in 1931 by University of Michigan professor Leroy Waterman.

Excavations at the site have revealed a well-planned city built around a network of streets. Among the public buildings uncovered to date are a basilical hall, bath houses, a theater, churches and a synagogue. More than 40 mosaics, including a mosaic floor, and a Roman wine vessel also have been uncovered.
