Michigan Governor John Engler signed a trade agreement with his three counterparts in the Central Galilee during a May visit arranged by Detroit's Federation and its Jewish Community Council. During meetings with Israeli Prime Benjamin Netanyahu, President Ezer Weizman and Trade Minister Natan Sharansky, Governor Engler spoke about the importance of Partnership 2000.
His visit also included tours of Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, the Central Galilee, Zippori, and the Phoenicia glass factory owned by Detroit industrialist William Davidson. Israeli residents with ties to Michigan held a dinner at the Israel Museum in his honor.
