Membership
The Synagogue has a friendly young membership with over 280 families. Approximately 100-200 members attend regular Shabbat services led by our dynamic Rabbi Naftali Brawer.
History
The community in Northwood is this year celebrating it's 10th Anniversary and the community is very proud of all it has achieved in it's short life. Chief Rabbi Dr Jonathan Sachs recently attended a 10th Anniversary celebration Malava Malka.
The Synagogue Building
The building is a new purpose built facility with the prayer hall on the ground floor, serving a dual purpose becoming a function and meeting hall when not in use for services. Additional rooms on the first floor are used for kiddush, meetings and the library. The second floor provides meeting rooms for the youth on Shabbat and Festivals.
Transport Links
Northwood is approximately 30 minutes travel by car from Heathrow and Luton Airports and 1½ hours from Gatwick and Stanstead Airports. The underground station at Northwood means that London is only 30 minutes by train.
Religious Identity
The community is Orthodox, positioned between the ultra religious and the reform viewpoint. It is a member of the United Synagogue.
The Professionals
Rabbi Naftali Brawer is the dynamic young full time minister to the Northwood community. He is married to Dina and they have three young sons. A Youth Worker, Bonnie Lerner works for the Northwood community jointly with Pinner. A New Shabbat Youth Worker, Jeremy Beider, has recently been appointed to work with youth over the age of 11 arranging services and programmes on Shabbat.
Synagogue Services
Services are held on Friday night and Shabbat. Mornings services are held on Mondays, Thursdays and Rosh Chodesh.
Local Schools
Moriah Jewish Primary School for children up to the age of 11 is situated close by in Pinner. JFS (Jews Free School) in Kenton and Immanuel College in Bushey for children aged 11 to 18 are approximately 30 minutes away, JFS is accessible by underground train.
There are a wide range of activities in Northwood:
Cheder
The Cheder is jointly operated with Pinner. Children aged 5 to 13 attend classes each Sunday morning under the guidance of Rabbi Broder. The curriculum includes Jewish knowledge, Jewish Festivals, History and Israel as well as learning to read and write Hebrew.
Adult Education
An extensive adult education programme is available with talks on a wide range of subjects, religious and communal, by guest speakers.
Holocaust Memorial Week
For the third year in January a special educational week for local schools to commemorate National Holocaust Memorial Day was organised.
Israel Committee
We have a very active UJIA committee and our community is now twinned with Meona in the north of Israel. In April a large group from Northwood will be visiting Meona.
The Martin Stanbrook Memorial Library
This is open for members of the community to borrow from an extensive range of adult and children's books, videos and CD's.
Shiurim
The Rabbi has regular shiurim for ladies and for the men in the community once a week.
JACS
Meet every Wednesday afternoon at our shul attracting about 60-100 for each meeting with a range of guest speakers and regular outings.
Youth Clubs and Activities
We have activities at the Henry Jackson Centre, adjoining Pinner Synagogue, a purpose built youth centre with activities this spring/summer including krav maga, street dance, musical theatre, drama and youth clubs after school and on Sunday for the various age groups in the community. Bnei Akiva also meet every Shabbat in Pinner and BBYO meet weekly at the HJC. Regular outing are arranged for the different age groups and leadership training is encouraged with Maccabi and the attandance of the Maccabi Youth Games in the summer and other inter-communal sports activities.
Youth Football Teams
These meet on Sunday afternoon and compete against other synagogue teams.
Brownies, Guides, Cubs and Scouts
Meet at either Northwood United synagogue or Pinner United Synagogue attracting young people from both communities.
