"Prayer for Freedom" - Tfila L'Herut: Shabbat with Limmud Galil
1.4.2009

Twelve days before celebrating Passover, the Festival of Freedom, 115 Confrontation Line residents gathered at the Kinar Hotel on the Sea of Galilee for a celebration of Shabbat with study and learning on the theme Tfila L'Herut - "Prayer for Freedom". Each Partnership 2000 delegation to the Limmud UK Conference returns with the responsibility of organizing a Limmud Galil Shabbat Conference. This task continues the spirit of Jewish learning from their experience at Limmud UK and incorporates them into the volunteer framework of Limmud Galil. The December 2008 delegation opened the Shabbat with the session they presented at the UK Conference on "The Importance of being Joyful in Judaism", which looked at joy and humour in Jewish life and folklore and culminated with a sampling of laughter yoga.

Participants welcomed Shabbat together with songs and readings that set the warm atmosphere for the Conference. Following the evening prayer  and Shabbat feast, the group celebrated "Oneg Shabbat" with stories, singing and wine into the night. Throughout Shabbat there was a choice of stimulating lectures, hevruta study prepared on "Prayer for Freedom and Freedom in Prayer", and meals with Shabbat singing and Dvar Torah. A special guest speaker was Rabbi Gideon Sylvester, whose lectures have been enjoyed by past delegates to Limmud UK. Rabbi Sylvester is now a Jerusalem resident and after the Shabbat has now been adopted into Limmud Galil.

The Shabbat concluded with a unique outdoor havdala - carrying each and every one of us into a more peaceful week and leaving us with the spirit of freedom and prayer to welcome the coming Pessach holiday.
