68 students from Nesher received scholarships through the generosity of the Jewish Foundation of Broward County Florida at an impressive ceremony last week.
Mayor David Amar spoke of the importance of the connection between the two communities and how the Jewish Community of Broward County have become true family members of the community. Through this project the communities have gained true friends. The mayor also spoke of the importance of education. The Municipality of Nesher has been nominated for the Ministry of Education's Excellence Award. The mayor stated that although there was some debate about delaying the ceremony as a result of the beginning of the war, it was clear to him that the ceremony should be held to show support for the Israeli Armed Forces.
Dr. Arieh Gutman, Co Chair of the Israeli Steering Committee spoke of the importance of higher education and how the Partnership 2000 project has enriched the lives of all of the residents of Nesher. Among those present were Moshe Laufer, Director of Education in Nesher, Israeli Steering Committee members and Levana Caro, Director of Partnerships in Nesher.
One of the students sang a very moving song to Gilad Shalit, the captured soldier held by the Hamas. All of the participants were very moved.
Over 50% of the recipients of the scholarships are new immigrants.
