Integrating Youth And Community - Merhavim
8.11.2006

This Partnership 2000 project supports the youth division in the community center. The division works to promote and cultivate youth leadership groups, in conjunction with developing responsibility, creativity, culture and social involvement of young people in the community. The aim is to encourage personal and group initiative along with providing an enjoyable, meaningful and educational alternative for leisure time- in collaboration with the youth groups, the agricultural alliance and Bnai Akiva. The broad-ranging activities make it possible to strengthen the ties between young people from the moshavim, and introduce them to diverse concepts and social values.

During the course of the year ongoing activities took place for about 2,000 children and teenagers, from Grades 4-5, Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-10. Activities are led by adult counselors from Mabuyim, Nir Moshe, Kelachim, Paamei Tashaz, Talmei Bilu, Gilat, Patish, Bitchah, Pduyim, Maslul and Nir Akiva.

This year's activity centered upon the events in commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day and Memorial Day. The young people took an active and integral part in the planning and performance of the ceremonies.

This year the youth division together with Southern Radio in Beersheva inaugurated a five day radio camp with the participation of the best broadcasters and radio journalists, giving about 30 young people the chance to produce jingles, moderate programs and conduct interviews during live broadcasts - an experiential activity which exposed them to the media in Israel.

During the course of the war the Community Center Association held a special event called "dancing in the crater" in Mitzpe Ramon, at which children from the North were hosted. Youth from Merhavim also took part, in which young ensembles and artists from all over Israel performed before a large and supportive audience.

The new year of activity begins on a note of renewal; new adult counselors were recruited for many towns, and they began to operate new projects, such as, the Community Beautification Patrol whose aim is to strengthen the bond between young people and the community by renovating and upgrading selected spots in the community, including the youth club. The activity is to be carried out by the young people along with volunteers from the community, in order to generate social solidarity.

During the summer vacation, Project "Stations in Time" was initiated. Young people began painting the bus stops (stations) located outside of the towns in order to create a more beautiful environment for the pleasure and convenience of the community. This project will continue in the coming year as well.

In Kelachim and Nir Moshe, the ASA Program (Hebrew acronym for "alcohol, drugs and violence") began to operate - a program whose aim is to provide meaningful and educational alternatives for the leisure time of the local youth, to prevent them from engaging in undesirable alternatives such as drug and alcohol use, and violent activities.
