When Jeffrey Trinz of Miami decided to join the Miami Major Gifts Mission in January he had no idea of what an impact his visit would have on children in both Miami, and its' Partnership 200 community, Or Akiva. The members of the mission had planned to perform a community service project in Or Akiva and upon arrival, were divided into groups and set to work.
Jeffrey's group was assigned a project in the "Rainbow Moadonit" where sixteen children from the Rothschild Elementary School spend the afternoon Sunday through Thursday in supervised play, homework preparation, and individual tutoring. The children eat their main meal, lunch, in the moadonit and leave for home after eating diner as well.
While helping decorate the walls of the moadonit, Jeffrey was impressed with the children and the coordinator of the program, who was really making the most out of very little so that the children could enjoy a happy and supportive environment. He decided that he would see to it that the children would enjoy some of the "extras" that the budget would not allow for.
Upon returning to Miami, Jeffrey went to the school were his own children were students, the Beth Am Day School, and talked to the staff and the students about his experience and impressions of the Rainbow Moadonit. Everyone was eager to be involved.
During the course of the spring semester all of the classes in the Beth Am Day School organized mitvah projects to raise funds for the Rainbow Moadonit. Car washes and bake sales activated the entire Beth Am community. At the end of the school year a check for $2,800 was sent to the Greater Miami Jewish Federation to transfer to the Rainbow!
As a result of the great work of the Beth Am student body the children in the Rainbow can now enjoy air-conditioning and have a lot of new educational games and sports equipment. On August 12th the children at the Rainbow hosted a day long trip for all 75 of the children in similar facilities in Or Akiva. Everyone had a wonderful time and said that it was the highlight of their summer vacation. All of this made possible by the children of the Beth Am Day School and Jeffrey Trinz who saw a Mitzvah at the end of the Rainbow.
