A review of the news for our partners from Coast-to-Coast Canada - March 2007

  • Kiryat Shmona has announced this year's recipients Awards of Honor from the municipality:  the police, the firefighters, Magen David Adom and to the health services "Klalit" in appreciation of their emergency services during the war; Nochi Dankner, Zeev Bielski and Avi Kavili for their contributions to education in the city; Yitzhak Weizman and municipal education department, and the Hesder Yeshiva of Kiryat Shmona for its three years of social action in the city, particularly during the recent war.
  • In anticipation of upcoming government reports the recent war, the State Comptroller's requested reports on a list of given topics from the municipalities of Kiryat Shmona, Tzfat and Haztor HaGlilit regarding the services they provided and their general performance during the war.  Kiryat Shmona has already established a committee of inquiry to respond to the Comptroller's concerns.
  • The Saadiya family established a scholarship fund at the Danziger school in memory of their son Liran, who was one of the first soldiers killed in the recent war.  The scholarship fund will benefit 15 outstanding 11th and 12th grade students of the school, who, In exchange for the scholarships, will volunteer in the community and participate in social service projects.  Students, parents, soldiers of the elite "Egoz" unit and the Mayor were present for the emotional ceremony in memory of Liran.
  • Also at the Danziger School, in keeping with Principal Amir Goldstein's promise to reinvigorate the school, the school is opening seven honors classes with high level Mathematics and English courses, in addition to personal tracks with a focus on either physics or the humanities.  The unique program will include special enrichment days, academic projects and encouraging social activism.  This program is a major step forward in closing the gap between educational opportunities in the center and in the northern periphery.
  • Bio-technicians and business leaders met in Kiryat Shmona to discuss opening a bio-technological park in Kiryat Shmona.  This is in keeping with their vision to develop the economic potential of Kiryat Shmona and the eastern Galilee through bio-technological projects.
  • On Sunday morning, following a recent snow storm, Mount Hermon was re-opened for visitors and travelers who wish to ski the slopes.
