Meitav singers from Rosh Ha'ayin, Israel, performing Thursday at another Holocaust Remembrance program at Samford University.
Samford University, a Baptist college, hosted another amazing Holocaust Remembrance program Thursday on its beautiful campus. The Meitav singers from Rosh Ha'ayin, Israel, performed for students and visitors from the Jewish community.
Members of our community were again taken, as they were after Wednesday night's community Holocaust commemoration at Samford, by the support the college provided for this series of remembrance events.
The leaders of the Meitav group were quite touched as well, recognizing the significance of a Baptist university hosting Jewish singers from Israel in connection with Holocaust Remembrance.
Birmingham is a remarkable place, said one of the Israeli group leaders. It is so beautiful and peaceful, she remarked, that it's hard to believe that Birmingham once was torn apart by racial strife and violence.
The Birmingham Jewish Federation again expresses its appreciation to Samford University for all that it did to make Meitav's visit here a success and for hosting a wonderful series of Holocaust Remembrance activities.
"Blown Away"
Long-time BJF volunteer Suzanne Bearman, who has helped facilitate the Birmingham-Rosh Ha'ayin partnership, added the following in an email:
The concert at Samford University Thursday was superb. The Meitav group is so talented and well-trained. Everyone was blown away by how good they were, and how warm and friendly they were.
I got to spend the day with them and realized our involvement with Meitav is meeting all the goals we set for our partnership with Rosh Ha'ayin: Strengthening the kesher (connection) between Birmingham, Rosh Ha'ayin and New Orleans (also involved in the partnership), blending the old and new parts of Rosh Ha'ayin, helping the disadvantaged with scholarships and them being wonderful ambassadors for Israel in the non-Jewish community.
