In early January this year, the Minister of Interior, Mr. Ronny Baron declared Yokneam "A City in Israel".
The town of Yokneam was built in the 1950s on the site of the ruins of ancient Yokneam, which was destroyed two thousand years ago. The new settlers, many of whom were diaspora Jews from North Africa, restored ancient olive orchards on the Carmel Mountains and planted new olive trees in the Jezreel Valley.
Today, over one hundred dynamic industrial companies have established themselves in Yokneam, among them reputable international industries and innovative start-ups on the cutting-edge of new technology. Recognized as a prime location for economic activity, Yokneam has attracted a large population of young professionals and skilled, new-immigrant families seeking a natural environment and higher quality of life. The City has a population of over 21,000 today and new neighborhoods continue to sprout.
On June 28th, the official festivities took place. Joining Mayor Simon Alfassi for this special occasion were Israeli Government Ministers, Members of the Knesset, Mayors from twin cities in Europe and other dignitaries.

Barry Rosenberg, Executive Vice President of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis and his wife Barbara personally brought warm wishes from both the Jewish Community of St. Louis and the Atlanta Jewish Community.

After the reception, an exciting city celebration was held in the Amphitheater where hundreds of children, youth and adults took part in an exciting show on stage. Over a thousand citizens from Yokneam sat on the grass, enjoying the local talent in both song and dance.
