Chovat Hatalmidim: Message to Teachers and Parents (11)
And are we so sure about our own yeshiva students? Have we done all that we can? While we can reasonably assume that students in the higher classes, who have learned Torah extensively and are Torah teachers themselves, will remain observant Jews, the same cannot be said for students in the lower classes. Many of them will leave the yeshiva, either out of choice or out of circumstance, to start working outside. As the Midrash relates, "one thousand students yield one teacher". Are we so sure that these pupils will not turn their back on Jewish tradition? Our experience unfortunately indicates otherwise. Why aren't we giving more attention to this challenge whilst the students are still with us? Every youth who foregoes tradition was with us at one point and grew up in our institutions. How is it that we don't connect the children, heart and soul, to the Almighty, such that the connection remains even as they mature and grow old?
