Chovat Hatalmidim: Message to Teachers and Parents (30)
Thus, it is imperative upon the father and educator to impress upon the child that it is the child's responsibility to mature into a loyal member of the Jewish people; and that the father and educator is only there to help the child help himself understand what the Almighty has instructed. The relationship is analogous to someone who asks a rabbi whether a piece of meat which he has is kosher or not - the person here made the conscious choice to observe kashrut, bears full responsibility for his actions and will discard meat that is not kosher; the rabbi is only there to help him to recognize what is kosher and what is not.
