That is not to say that the teacher should act in a lightheaded fashion in the presence of the pupil or make a fool of himself, heaven forbid. On the contrary, the pupil must view the teacher as a highly respectable person - but also as a person with a pleasant demeanor. When the teacher induces laughter, the pupil should also tremble ever so slightly; and when the teacher rebukes, he should make sure to likewise cheer the pupil up a bit. The pupil should tremble when he sees the teacher - not because he views the teacher as an angry or violent person, rather, because the teacher's impeccable character evokes the pupil's respect. If the teacher's manners are angelic he can chastise his pupils without causing them to hate him; and when he compliments them they will love and respect him all the more so.
