If someone feels he is haughty and wishes to totally root out this trait, thoughts alone are not enough; rather actions are necessary. For example if someone is used to wearing flashy clothes, he must go to the other extreme, until he feels he has uprooted his haughtiness, and then return to wearing ordinary attire.
