Largely thanks to the contingent from Hadassah Neurim, Israel’s schoolboys athletics team won the International School Federation Championships in Turkey in June. There were outstanding performances from Hadassah Neurim’s Yevgeny Minenko who won the gold medal in the 110 meters hurdles in a time of 14.46 seconds, while his brother Anatoly took the bronze medal in the discus with a throw of 45.49 meters. In throwing the hammer Igor Nuzhny took the silver medal with a distance of 16.37 meters.
Hadassah Neurim Director Nahum Katz said that over the past year alone his students had won 57 medals. The sports program at the village, which is recognized by the Israel Athletics Association as the National Youth Center for Athletics, is supported by the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and the Hadassah Chapter in Houston.
There are over 100 students in Hadassah Neurim's National Youth Center for Athletic's Excellence Program, many of them new immigrants from the Former Soviet Union and Ethiopia as well as Israeli-born students. The Sports program at Hadassah Neurim is set to undergo expansion in three stages. In the first stage a new eightlane synthetic athletics track will be built together with changing rooms and showers. Then the village’s two sports halls will be renovated and upgraded. And finally new sports pitches will be laid out together with sports treatment and medical facilities and a sauna.
