Ben Yakir Bar Mitzvah Celebration
Gabi Weisfeld (center) with the Ben Yakir Bar Mitzvah students.
At Ben Yakir 27 boys celebrated their Bar Mitzvah on May 19th. This year's party was especially lavish thanks to a donation from Gabi Weisfeld and Marla Dan of Hadassah WIZO Canada in honor of the Bar Mitzvah of their grandsons. The contribution funded the party, presents, clothes and a day-trip to Jerusalem. An additional donation through Hadassah WIZO Canada from Bar Mitzvah boy Bryan Flatt from Toronto enabled each boy at Ben Yakir tallit and tefillin for each boy. "When you become a Bar Mitzvah boy you take on many responsibilities, one of which is sharing with others," he wrote in his greetings. Ben Yakir's Bar Mitzvah boys were also given a fun-day dream present from the Spirit of Israel and all flew to Eilat. Forty-three children from Ramat Hadassah Szold celebrated their Bar Mitzvah / Bat Mitzvah on May 13 at the village. The day was devoted to Jerusalem and the Jewish experience and there was a sound and light show about Jerusalem as well as the actual Bar Mitzvah ceremony in the synagogue where the students were given an aliyah leTorah and laid tefilin. Representatives from Hadassah, Women’s Zionist Organization of America attended the ceremony and the festive dinner. It was a similar story at Kiryat Yearim where 15 children celebrated their Bar / Bat Mitzvah on May 23rd. Parents came the evening before to sleep over at the village and on the day itself the students were taken to the Western Wall in Jerusalem for the Bar Mitzvah ceremony. There was also a visit to Masada.
