Nitzana Hosts Colorado Mega-Mission
Doug Sasserman, Executive Director of the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado unveils a plaque following the plating of trees at Nitzana which says, "The Denver and Boulder Jewish Communities Add Roots To The Negev Vision."
The 120 delegates from the Denver and Boulder Jewish communities were hosted at Nitzana in December. The Mega-Mission was one of the largest Jewish delegations to visit Israel during 2003 and its presence at Nitzana cemented and enhanced the already strong relationship between the Negev Youth Aliyah village and the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado.

The Colorado visitors came to show their solidarity with Israel, the Ramat Hanegev region and Nitzana and met with the young new immigrants students from Ethiopia and the Former Soviet Union on the KEDMA and SELAH Science programs. The Denver and Boulder visitors heard about Nitzana's unique range of activities, not only in educating and integrating newcomers but also in teaching science and desert ecology to Israeli students from disadvantaged backgrounds. A symbolic highlight of the visit was the planting of trees by the Denver/Boulder delegation.

Mega Mission Follows In The Footsteps of the Children of Israel

The following day 40 members of the Mega-Mission from Colorado returned to Nitzana for a very special event. Led by Nitzana Director David Palmach and Rabbi Daniel Cohen of Denver, the visitors journeyed in the footsteps of the Patriarchs and the Children of Israel as we read each week in the Torah. Accompanied by the shin-shinim volunteers and their guitars who serenaded the Americans with music and songs, this was a very special experience. Reconstructing the route taken by their ancestors thousands of years ago, this was a rare opportunity for Colorado Jewry to connect with its Israelite roots.
