Dilemmas Facing Israel Today: Map Activity

"HASHOMER ACHI ANOCHI"

Synopsis                                            
The map of Israel becomes the basis for reviewing dilemmas and options - this time of Israel and Israelis - in the context of Aliyot.

Aims:
- To deliberate together on the problems facing the average Israeli.
- To foster engagement and the search for solutions.
- To create a sense of proportion and a link to the next activity.

Age: 13 upwards
Time: 40 minutes
No. of participants: 15 or more

Materials: A copy of the map for each participant;

Shabbat Dvar Torah by Rabbi Hammer

Procedure:

1. Each participant receives a map of Israel and fills in the number of Jews living in Israel and the daily dilemmas they face.
2. The group is divided into sub-groups of 5, whose members discuss the problems they each wrote down, and seek common solutions.
3. All the participants come together to consider the solutions proposed.
4. Discuss in the light of the Dvar Torah by Rabbi Hammer

Variations
- Prepare a general panel of volunteers/speakers, to present issues and their ideas for solutions;
  or  
- Create the title page of a daily paper/blog/ejournal with: headlines and story headings on the dilemmas and ideas for solutions;
or
- Hold a discussion on Israeli reality with a guest speaker;
  or
- Show the visual resource: "Lul", and review:
a)  The expectations of each wave of Aliyah;
b)  How each Aliyah movement receives the next wave;
c)  The role assumed in integration of new olim by the Israeli population, including the oleh vatik (veteran immigrant). Discuss in the light of the Dvar Torah by Rabbi Hammer
