Preparing your own Maccabiah!

• This can be built onto the previous activity.

• Let the group research the story of the Maccabiah games if they did not do that within the framework of the previous activity.

• Come together and discuss what they learnt. Try and single out the main aims of the Maccabiah. Have a look at Yosef Yekutieli’s original aims as expressed in section 6 above.

The development of Jewish culture – both physical and spiritual, and the presentation of that culture to the Jewish people and to the whole world: the development of Jewish sport in the world and the emphasis of the idea that Jewish sporting athletes were not just part of their home countries but were part of the Jewish people as a whole. The emphasizing of the fact that Eretz Yisrael is the centre of the Jewish world; and finally, the strengthening of the Maccabi movement.

• Now plan a Maccabiah sports day. It is clear that this will include sporting events but maybe some cultural or other elements should be added. The group should decide. The aim is to build a programme that is as close as possible to the aims of the Maccabiah games. It should not be just a sports day, but should rather include other elements that express the Jewish character of the day. Try and express in some way Yekutiel’s first three aims.

• Do the day!
