Sporting Jews: The Exhibition

a. Have the members of the group do some individual research and to come up with the names of – and details on – famous sporting Jews. They should each look for two people, one of whom was a sportsperson in their home country and the other of whom was/is a sportsperson in the Yishuv - pre-State Mandate Palestine, or Israel.

b. Bring the material and pool it and prepare an exhibit based around the different characters.

c. Now together, bring material from different Maccabi sites and start to put a picture together of the aims and the history of the Maccabiah. Examine the following websites:

www.internationalgames.net/maccabia.htm
www.maccabiusa.com
www.maccabiworld.org

• Make this into part of the exhibit and then try and find out as much as possible about the participation of Jews you’re your country in the history of the Maccabiah. Add that into the exhibition too.

• Invite parents to a day of opening of the exhibit. If there is someone in the community who was a significant sportsperson, invite them along to speak and talk about their career. Alternatively, if there is someone or several people who took part in one of the Maccabiahs, ask them along to speak about the event and their experiences.
