Urechatz – ורחץ

From the Teachings of Nechama Leibovitz

Edited by Itshak Reiner and Shmuel Pearless
Excerpts with permission from Urim Publications

Karpas - כרפס

All participants take a piece of Karpas (a vegetable other than the Maror) less than the size of an olive, dip it in salt water and eat it after reciting the following blessing:

Blessed are You, L-rd, our G-d, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the earth.

(When reciting this blessing have in mind that it is also for the bitter herbs (of maror and korech, to be eaten later on).

Yachatz - יחץ

Take the middle matzah and break it into two, one piece larger than the other. The larger piece is set aside to serve as afikoman. The smaller piece is put back, between the two matzot.

Maggid – מגיד

Raise the tray with the matzot and say:

This is the bread of affliction that our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Whoever is hungry, let him come and eat; whoever is in need, let him come and celebrate the Pesach festival. This year we are here; next year may we be in the land of Israel. This year we are slaves; next year may we be free people.

The tray with the matzot is moved aside, and the second cup is poured.
