    Course Overview

    Introduction
We shall begin the course with a live broadcast with Neil, whereby we consider the recent events concerning Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and the affect on the upcoming Elections (Live Broadcast is subject to availability).

    Session One
In this session we shall consider the rise of a social economic agenda in the Israeli political discourse. The revitalization of Israel's Labor Party as a social democratic party will be analyzed.

    Session Two
Ethnic difference has played an important and often divisive role in Israeli politics. This session will look at the creation of the ethnic problem in the 1950's, the Black Panthers and the rise of the Likud in 1977. Moreover we shall consider the rise of Shas as an alternative, ethnically orientated and anti establishmentarian party. In this light we shall seek to understand the rise of Peretz, the first Moroccan leader of the predominantly Ashkenazi Labor party. We shall also consider the importance of the Russian vote in Israel.

    Session Three
The Israeli political and electoral system can often appear confusing and appear complicated at a first glance. This session will look at how Israelis vote, how parties receive seats in the Knesset and the complexities, advantages and disadvantages of a both a list system and coalition building.

    Session Four
An important consideration for the first post disengagement election is whether there has been a collapse of the ideological right in Israel. In this session we shall distinguish between predominantly secular groups representing "Eretz Yisrael hashlema" (The greater land of Israel)and the religious rightwing such as Mafdal. We shall consider the effect of the disengagement on the parties.

    Session Five
An important consideration for the first post disengagement election is whether there has been a collapse of the ideological right in Israel. In this session we shall distinguish between predominantly secular groups representing "Eretz Yisrael hashlema" (The greater land of Israel) and the religious rightwing such as Gush Emunim. We shall consider the effect of the disengagement on these groups.

    Summary
We shall conclude by considering the unique characteristics of the 2006 elections in Israel, touching on the ideological consequences and the significance for individual parties and political characters.

Upon the completion of the course, students will be invited to join a live web event with Neil Lazarus which will provide an opportunity for discussion.

    Teaching Method
