Global Tu B'shvat Videoconference Celebration 2008

JANUARY 17th, 21st & 22nd 2008

Registration is now closed!

Participating this year are Jewish Schools from  Atlanta, Akron OH, Bet Shemesh, Be'er Sheva, Columbus OH, Dallas, Hong Kong, Jerusalem, Kansas, Manchester UK, Memphis, Milwaukee, Montreal, Modi'in, New York City, Re'ut nr Modi'in, Vilna Lithuania, Toronto and Yardley PA.

For the past seven years, the Resource Division of the Department for Jewish Zionist Education has hosted the renowned Tu B'Shvat Global Celebration, a mega-conference that unites Jewish schools across the globe to celebrate Tu B'Shvat, the Birthday of Trees. From Be'er Sheva to Belgium, Manchester to Montreal, and Toronto to Toledo, Ohio, hundreds of students participate in a visual exchange via videoconference technology. In January 2007, 31 classes from across the globe participated in celebrating our "Tree Planting for the North".

Israel @ 60 and Hatikvah Project

As we are coming up to celebrating Israel at 60 , join us this year as we highlight Israel's achievements over the past 60 years.  Each school will focus its research aspect of Israel's achievements over the past 60 yesras. Whether you choose to research about Science & Technology, Medical advancements, Arts, Education and Culture, Security, Community life & Aliyah, Israel & Diaspora - your school group, as is traditional in Global Tu B'shvat, will present to the other participating partners your project through art-work, music, drama and large visuals.

The Hatikvah Project has also teamed up with Israel Channel Two Television in a unique project which aims to introduce Israel's national anthem to Jews all over the world, convey its contents and significance, and enable them to learn how to sing it.

This year is also Shnat Shemittah, the Jewish Sabbatical Year, which comes up in cycle every seven years. During the entireyear, the land must rest and what grows on it is subject to certain agricultural restrictions. This year, unlike other years, we will not be planting our trees in Israel on your behalf - instead, we will all together plant seeds of ideas for Israel, as we come up to the State of Israel's 60th birthday. We will also broadcast live from the Green House of a special school in Jerusalem and share their agricultural experiments as the students demonstrate how they use Technology and Halachah, in order to keep Shemittah.

Global Tu B'shvat is designed to give Jewish students in middle and high schools around the world the opportunity to celebrate, reflect and contribute to each other’s learning in real time, using advanced multi-point video conferencing technology. Member schools will design and conduct videoconference-based presentations and activities focused on both Jewish life in their communities and in Israel.
