Just as Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is considered the birthday of the world, Tu B'Shvat (the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shvat) is considered the birthday of the trees.
One of the ways Tu B'Shvat is celebrated is with a special ritual Seder, first developed in the 16th century by Jewish mystics) who used the Passover Seder as their model. Modern Tu B'Shvat Sedarim are celebrated by eating special foods, reciting appropriate prayers, Biblical readings, stories, poetry, songs and discussions about nature and the environment.
Here at Global Tu B'Shvat, Jewish schools extend their festive tables accross oceans, sing together, bless the fruit and learn together. |
