The Jewish Agency recruits and trains dynamic young and talented shlichim (emissaries) from Israel for educational placement in Jewish communities, youth movements, schools, Jewish organizations and campuses around the world as Areivim. This term comes from the Hebrew saying, "Kol Yisrael areivim zeh bezeh" - all Jews are mutually responsible - and these highly motivated young educators from Israel are imbued with a sense of responsibility towards Jewish communities in the Diaspora.
These shlichim are committed to strengthening Jewish identity and create a connection between Diaspora Jewry and the State of Israel. These young shlichim engage in a variety of activities in accordance with local needs and their specific job definition.
Types of Areivim shlichut:
Areivim: Young Volunteer Community shlichim
The young community shaliach works directly within the community - with children, youth, students and adults. He or she endeavors to impart Jewish heritage and Zionism, to encourage members of the community to visit Israel. Areivim will work to provide the community with a taste of Israel and foster the development of a young local leadership, as well as organizing a wide range of educational activities based on the Jewish calendar cycle and representing Israel before the general public, and teaching Hebrew language.
Shlichut Requirements: Single / married without children; aged between 23-30 and resident in Israel; academic background and completion of the IDF, or Israel National Service; suitable experience in informal education (as a youth counselor, community worker, or socially-engaged student), and/or experience in formal education; extensive knowledge in the area of Jewish and/or Israel studies; fluency in the language of the country of assignment.
Period of Shlichut: One year, with an option for a one-year extension.
Areivim: Young volunteer Hillel Shlichim
The Hillel shaliach represents Israel & Jewish life on campus and works to elevate Jewish student awareness of issues related to Jewish identity and Israel, as well as to strengthen the Jewish student's sense of connection to the State of Israel. He or she promotes Jewish student participation in Israel Programs, as well as the development of Student Seminars and in-service training on campus. Our Hillel shlichim also address Hasbara - Israel Advocacy, and work to promote a positive image of Israel within the academic community.
Shlichut Requirements: Single and resident in Israel; aged 23-30; graduate of IDF or Israel National Service; completion of at least one year of academic study; suitable experience as a counselor/community worker or in the area of education/Aliyah; Hasbara - Israel Advocacy skills; extensive knowledge in the area of Jewish and /or Israel studies; fluent in the language of the country of assignment.
Period of Shlichut: 10 months (one academic year), with the option of a one-year extension.
Areivim: Young volunteer movement Shlichim
The Shaliach is placed with Jewish and Zionist youth organizations or movements in the Diaspora, to coordinate the work of movement centers and assist local madrichim (youth counselors). Shlichim are responsible for organizing and operation of leadership training courses, seminars, shabbatonim and movement camps. They recruit youth movement members for Israel Experience and the range of longer programs in Israel (Machon LeMadrichei Chul, Shnat Sherut Voluntary Service, and other MASA - Israel Journey programs), and maintain ongoing contact with movement members, graduates and their parents.
Shlichut Requirements: Suitable youth movement background and resident in Israel;academic background, and graduate of IDF or National Service; extensive knowledge in the area of Jewish and/or Israel studies; fluency in the language of the country of assignment.
Period of Shlichut: One year, with an option for a one-year extension.
