November 2010

Dear Friends and Partners,

On this Hanukah eve, we see light prevailing over darkness, the few over the many and the warmth of family togetherness. We wish you and your loved ones a happy Hanukah.

Following from the many student and children activities on the customs and history of the Holiday of Lights - we, the Ibim family, light the candles of Hanukah together this year. We recite the traditional prayers, revel in the holiday atmosphere of songs and games, and of course, enjoy the tasty treats.

After the initial absorption period, this past month brought a welcome routine for the ulpan students, anxious to move ahead with their Hebrew studies. It also allowed the Ibim staff to get on with their work of absorption and education.

In this newsletter, I will highlight some of the past month’s activities. The December newsletter will come out in 2011, so we will reconnect again next year!

I must add that in these moments, our hearts are with the people of Israel and the families of those who were tragically lost in the Carmel fire. We wish a speedy recovery for those wounded, and strength to those firefighters and others who labored unremmittingly to fight the dreadful fire. We hope to see a quick end to this conflagration, so we can work towards rehabilitation of the Carmel - one of the most beautiful spots in our small country.

All the best,
Soni Zinger
Director, Ibim-San Diego Student Village

Visitors to Ibim

Ibim was happy to welcome the Leichtag Family Foundation delegation from San Diego. We had the privilege of hosting the representatives from the Foundation headed by Ms. Charlene Seidle. We presented the various and varied Village activities implemented in cooperation with the San Diego Federation and the Shaar HaNegev Regional Countil. Our visitors were already familiar with some of our residents and their personal stories. Their reception was warm and we welcome their next visit.

Strutting our Stuff

A European delegation of journalists and bloggers made a scheduled visit to ibim to observe both the facility and the residents. We see oursleves as ambassadors for Israel and able witnesses on daily life in the region surrounding Gaza, which was subject for so many years to rocket attacks. We escorted them around the Village and happily reported on our work with immigrant absorption - particularly about our fantastic cooperation with the Jewish community from abroad.

Ibim is proud to welcome visitors to its attractive premises.

Second Helpings

Committed to the environment, as well as to the welfare of our residents, the Ibim Second Hand Shop recently renewed its activities. Together with a Sapir College initiative and the Dean of Students, successful collections are made of clothing, household goods, toys and books for our residents. The festive opening produced a direct and pleasurable meeting between the immigrants and veteran Israelis who were happy to facilitate the initiative.

No Slacking

For the ninth year in a row, Ibim was a recipient of the top ranking 5-star prize from the Council for a Beautiful Israel for the best-kept, attractive and clean grounds. We are very proud that the first home in Israel for our many residents is beautiful and well maintained.

Of Sound Body and Mind

The soccer field next to the community center nearby was filled with Ibim athletes and enthusiastic fans. The Ofek program, the Nitzanim Family program, the ulpan students and the staff competed in a variety of endeavors. Ofek 6 were the unequivocal champions - congratulations!
