Community Projects to Restore the North - Acco

Facts about the community:

  • Founded in 1954-56
  • Current population: 45,600
  • Ethnic and religious makeup of the city is 75.7% Jewish, 22% Arab Muslim, 2.1% is Arab Christian and 0.2% is Druze.
  • 11.1% of the population are retired senior citizens (over age 65)
  • Ranks 4 out of 10 on the socioeconomic scale (according to the National Bureau of Statistics)
  • 2,821 local residents are in need (according to the local Department of Welfare)
  • 13,800 resident are children ages 0-17
  • 2,149 children are immigrants, 225 of which are in need (according to the local Department of Social Services)
  • 9,294 children and youth are registered in regional educational frameworks:
    • 4,428 are in elementary school
    • 1,955 are in junior high school
    • 2,562 are in high school
  • City industries include commercial and tourist businesses, the Old City of Acco has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
