April 27, 2004 - April 29, 2004 The Zionist Organization of Russia "Moria" plays an active role in the three day Conference on Anti-Semitism On the 26 of April the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey V. Lavrov received the Secretary General of EAJC , the President of Federal Jewish National Cultural Autonomy Mikhail A. Chlenov and the delegation of NCSJ: Advocates on behalf of Jews in Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States & Eurasia headed by its President Robert J. Meth. The meeting was held in the context of the regular consultations with the direction of Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and because of the EAJC’s participating in forthcoming OSCE Conference on Anti-Semitism in Berlin, April 27-29, 2004. Mr. Chlenov presented to Mr. Lavrov the materials on anti-Semitism in the RF prepared by EAJC and Moscow Bureau for Human Rights. Mikhail Chlenov reported to the Minister about EAJC’s activity in the field of inter-civilization dialogue and gave him the report on the conferences held in 2002-2003. Sergey Lavrov highly appreciated the work of the Congress and promised assistance in organization of subsequent dialogue actions. The meeting was held in the context of the preparation for the forthcoming OSCE Conference on Anti-Semitism in Berlin, April 27-29, 2004. Government delegations of 51 states – members of OSCE as well as many nongovernmental public and remedial organizations took part in the Conference. Ms. E. Pamfilova spoke on the subject: “The Role of Government and Civil Society in Tolerance Development”, in which she described the state of anti-Semitism in Russia. The delegation of EAJC headed by its President Alexander A. Machkevitch participated in the Conference. Mikhail A. Chlenov handed over to Ms. Pamfilova the materials of anti-Semitism monitoring in the Russian Federation carried out by EAJC and familiarized her with the position of the Jewish Community in Russia, alarmed by frequent demonstration of anti-Semitism, wide and unhampered spreading of anti-Semitic periodical and literature. Especially there was concern expressed over the position of law machinery quite often connived at anti-Semitic chauvinists. The striking example of it is so-called “the affair of the famous publisher-anti-Semite V. Korchagin”, dragged on for about 10 years without any result. E. Pamfilova and M. Chlenov arranged for constant interaction of the Committee on Human Rights and Russian Jewish Community on the problems of confrontation to xenophobia, racism and anti-Semitism. The Director of Moscow Bureau for Human Rights Alexander Brod and the Director of Moscow Office of World Congress of Russian Jewry Matvey Chlenov took part in the meeting.
