Educational Intervention for New Immigrant Children Living at Jewish Agency Absorption Centers in Northern Israel

Unmet Financial Need: $3,330,000

The Need

Fifteen hundred new immigrant children and youth living in ten Jewish Agency absorption centers located throughout northern Israel had an unforgettable summer. Instead of making new friends, having fun and beginning to acclimate into Israeli society, these children spent their entire summer vacation in bomb shelters taking refuge from the horrors of Israel's latest war.

The summer vacation is typically the period during which absorption center staff focus on educational intervention programs that assist children to close educational gaps and improve their Hebrew language, English and math skills. Summer learning programs also help to bolster children's self confidence and give them the tools needed to begin the school year on equal footing with their veteran Israeli peers. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances of the prolonged war, these programs did not take place. Yet, even in times of peace when educational enrichment is offered, the educational infrastructure at most absorption centers is often weak and requires new and innovative programs. Furthermore, the challenges that new immigrant children face are so vast that educational enrichment is needed throughout the entire school year.

The Jewish Agency Response

We seek your support to implement a variety of educational enrichment programs for immigrant children during the school year that will both ease their transition into the Israeli educational system as well as improve both the children's and their parents' well-being.

Detailed Description of Program Components

1. Computer rooms

Provide framework for teaching Hebrew and English, preparation for first grade and computer courses for youth. Computer rooms are needed at three absorption centers: Haifa-Hanita, Merhavia and Nazareth Elite. Total cost: $180,000

2. Educational Playrooms

All ten absorption centers require educational playrooms that offer a quiet place for early childhood activities for parents and children. Total cost: $350,000 including equipment and operating costs for one year.

3. Libraries

Every absorption center in the North requires a library with appropriate reading materials for immigrant parents and their children. The library will be staffed by a professional who will also offer story telling and other activities that introduce children to the world of books and help them to improve their Hebrew. Total cost: $250,000 including furniture, books and staff for one year.

4. Upgrading Sports Fields and Playgrounds

Provide a place for children and youth to release energy in a positive manner as well as develop their athletic and physical abilities. Total cost: $200,000

5. Educational Enrichment

Children in kindergarten through second grade will receive educational enrichment to meet their potential that is tailored to their individual needs 2-3 times per week throughout the school year and vacations, including a computer course. Total cost for 500 children: $650,000

6. Private Tutoring

Children in 3rd through 11th grade require more individual attention since many of them by this age have already developed significant learning gaps.  Individual tutoring will be provided in Hebrew, English, math and bible studies. The children and youth will also have an opportunity to participate in an arts and crafts or sports enrichment activity. Total cost for 1,000 children and youth: $1,700,000

Funding Request

We seek your support of $3,330,000 to help advance immigrants who were directly affected by Israel's recent war. With your help their integration back into 'normal' Israeli life will not be impeded by the trauma or stress they just experienced.

It was more than frightening. The whistle of rockets overhead and the boom when they landed were enough to shake up anyone's feeling of security. For new immigrants who don't yet understand the language, or know their way around – it was horrific.
