Facts about the community:
- Created in 1963 from the municipal merge of the Israeli Arab town of Tarshiha and the Jewish town of Ma'a lot
- Current population: 20,900
- More than 10% of the population are retired senior citizens (over age 65)
- Ethnic and religious makeup of the city was 79.7% Jewish and other non-Arabs, and 20.0% Arab (8.9% Muslim, 9.9% Christian, and 1.0% Druze)
- Ranks 4 out of 10 on the socioeconomic scale (according to the National Bureau of Statistics)
- 1,209 local residents are in need (according to the local Department of Welfare)
- 1,418 children are immigrants, 169 of which are in need (according to the local Department of Social Services)
- 6,300 residents are children and youth (ages 0-17)
- 4,279 Jewish and Arab children and youth are registered in regional educational frameworks:
- 1,926 are in elementary school
- 1,062 are in junior high school
- 1,209 are in high school
