Activity One: The Meaning of Peace

Purpose

  • To enable participants to understand the importance of peace to Israel and her need to live with security.
  • To bridge participants to points of identification with Israel's need for peace and security.

Equipment

  • A school computer room, or computer access.
  • If this is not possible, facilitators may reprint articles from the links suggested and use them as handouts.
  • Video of recent news from Israel showing violence.
  • Arts and Craft Materials - large poster board, small colored cards, etc.

Time and Suitability

One hour.
15-17 years old; students or study circle.

The Program

1. The facilitator should seat participants. Welcome them and introduce the theme of the activity. Explain that you want to explore the subject of peace.

2. Show a video recording of the news regarding Israel from the previous night.

3. Discuss the following questions:

  • Why do you think there is so much violence today between Israel and the Palestinians?
  • When you hear about violence and terrorism how do you feel.?
  • Have you ever felt unsafe and when?

4. If computers are available, allow participants time to explore the following site, starting from this url: http://www.mfa.gov.il/mfa/go.asp?MFAH00t10.
Participants should work in groups for about 20 minutes.

  • Ask them to select the most powerful sentences from speeches about peace.
  • Ask them to cut sentences out and make a montage of quotes on card.
  • For photographs and headlines they can visit their favorite news sites.

5. Participants then present their montages in turn.

6. Discussion Points:

  • What sentences were chosen and why?
  • What did you learn about Palestinian and Israeli views on peace?
